Using the Machine Translation Test Portal

The Machine Translation Test Portal provided by Language I/O allows users to compare translation quality across our many integrated machine translation engines. 

Login to the Portal

• Log in to the Service Portal.
• Click on "Machine Translation Portal"
  

Configure Your Translation Request

• The MT Portal allows you to enter the content you want to translate and define the source language, target language, and other options.

1. Enter the text you wish to translate in the area labeled "Text to Translate".
2. Next to "Source Language", select the language of the text you just entered.
3. Next to "Target Language", select the language you want to translate to. 
4. Select "Compare Translation Vendors" if you want to compare translations across all of the machine translation (MT) engines that your account is associated with. Doing this will return several sets of translations, one for each engine. Leave it unchecked to only generate one translation.
5. (Optional) The "Debug" option is only available to developer accounts. This features generates additional output to demonstrate which of your glossary terms were imposed upon each of the integrated MT engines.

Understanding Translation Results

• Upon clicking Submit, you see a single result per MT engine as shown below.
  • If the term "glossary" is appended to the MT engine name, this means your glossary terms (or preferred translations for certain words and phrases that have been loaded into your Language I/O account configuration) were detected in your source content and were included in the translation. In this example, no glossary was applied.

Debug

When the debug option is selected for developer accounts, you can see the different stages of translation for each integrated MT engine.

1. The first stage labeled "pre-translation glossary" shows the source content with each glossary term that was detected delimited in some fashion. In the example below, you will see that the we detected the term "Language I/O" in the source content and wrapped it in tags. 
2. The second stage labeled "glossary pre-cleanup" shows the glossary term still wrapped in tags, but embedded in the translated content passed back by the MT engine. 
3. The third stage labeled "glossary" will show the complete translation, but with the tags removed. 
4. The fourth stage labeled "no glossary" (not shown below) will include the MT engine output without the glossary term imposed - or as the translation would look without Language I/O imposing any glossary terms.

Simplify text (Only for English source texts)

Check "Simplify Text" to generate a simplified version of the source text. During this process, the text passes through a Large Language Model routine that lightly alters the source content to increase the likelihood of a high-quality machine translation. This process is designed to preserve the tone and meaning of the original message.
